Of course. Your tongue is designed to fit perfectly in the space inside your teeth. When you bite it, it does swell. Very quickly, I might add. Your tongue is the fastest healing part of your body! It swells because when you bit down, the nerves signaled your brain that "hey, tongue is injured. repair now" and it sends out a message for the cells around it to make things to heal the damage. Because it is swollen and larger than the space it was designed for, you are more prone to bite it, making stay swollen even longer. Take some ibuprofen to help reduce swelling.

I have been told on many occasions that I should learn to bite my tongue.
On the rare occassions I have bitten my tongue I have only had the misfortune to do it once though, no matter how much it swelled.
