If my wife is breastfeeding could she still take the birth control pills she used before she got pregnant?

Or do breast feeding mothers have to take special birth control pills?

There are special birth control pills for breastfeeding women I think the difference is that they don't have estrogen in them. There is also the depo-provera shot. If she takes regular birth control pills she will have a lot of trouble producing milk. Of course if she's breast feeding and on the pill you don't have to worry about birthcontrol because she'll never even want sex! LOL! She should talk to her OB/GYN and perhaps you should go with so you can both discuss your concerns.

My doctor gave me birth control pills while I was breastfeeding. I didn't know there was a different kind. I have been taking the same pills for 4 years. I started them when my daughter was 6 weeks old and breastfeeding, and I still take them now.

- There are no special birth control pills for pregnant women.
- It's important to remember that everything the mother ingest is in the breast milk, therefor the baby will have some of the hormones released by the pill. Double check with your pediatrician, I'm sure he'll tell you that theres a minimal risk, but to avoid it all together, if you can.

Yes. But if your worried about it you should ask your doctor about the mini pill is a birth control pill with a smaller dose of hormones. Some people think that you cant get pregnant while your nursing. That's not true you can. I did.

If your wife is breastfeeding she has to take progesterone only pills. They are few options for breastfeeding women and contraception. I chose an IUD since it requires not having to remember to take a pill.

I don't think women are supposed to take birth control pills while breastfeeding, but she should check with her doctor.

A breast feeding woman should check with her doctor or the baby's pediatrician before taking ANY medication, including over the counter kinds. We cannot be sure what will be excreted in the breast milk or what side affects it could have on the child unless we ask a doctor. Please, ask the doctor!

What does your doctor say. My doctor said, "NO". I would definitely check before I took the BC pills and breastfed my baby.
