It sounds like it might be or someone in the family was. Get hold of their birth and marriage certificates. Also ask any living relatives what they know about the family background.. use one of the better online genealogical sites and Trace it back as far as you can on your fathers side as we live in a Patriarchal society where the family name is handed down through father to son.
Also trace you mothers side of the family as best you can it could come from a mix of nationalities.

It's very possible, but she should really make a concerted effort to track them down via marriage,death or birth records.Changing a last name is fairly easy to do, and very common in imigrants, even if the family imigrated back in the 1800's.That why you'll find people of just about every heritage with the last name "Smith" or "Jones".The good news is that these are all public records, and it will be relatively easy to track these people down.I'm not sure about obtaining the parents medical records, but it is possible that it can be done.
