If not, what scenario would have to unwind for the N.Y. Yankees to not win the American League Eastern Division ?

And, who would knock the bombers out of first place ?

It ain't over till it's over..........who said that???? Not until the math works in favor of the Bombers. Remember the '04 playoffs. Yankees up 3-0 to the Beantowners and look what happened!! I for one, will wait and see.

I believe it is fair to say that the New York Yankees have now clinched the conference. I have been saying all season that if the Yankees got 5 games up that the Red Sox couldn't reclaim the conference lead. The Red Sox are obviously the only team that could knock the bombers out of first place and we have seen how they are playing. With Boston's starting and relief pitching going the way it is I don't see any way they can knock the Yankees out of first place. I believe that the Red Sox lineup is actually overrated. The Red Sox really only have two great batters, Manny Ramirez and David "Big Poppy" Ortiz, other than that their lineup is mediocre at best. Also, I will run some numbers by you, before coming to Boston in 2003 and batting behind Manny Ramirez David Ortiz never hit more than 20 home runs in one season. I am not trying to take anything away from Ortiz because, even though I am a Yankee fan, I give him props, I would certainly like to see him become a Yankee, he is a great hitter. But I am saying that a main reason of all his home runs is because he is getting more pitches to hit hitting in front of Manny Ramirez. I wouldn't even be surprised if Toronto ended up finishing ahead of the Red Sox.

No - "clinch" is a precise term in baseball, meaning a team's lead is greater than the number of games remaining. A 5-1/2 game lead with 39 games remaining in the season is ridiculously far from having the race decided. Right now, I'd be a lot more confident in the Mets' 14 game lead than the Yankees' 5 and a half.

Yes it's fair, and it would take like a 10-15 game losing streak with Boston having a 20 game win streak for them to choke it away, it's not going to happen and the Black and Blue Jays aren't going anywhere, they just won the division tonight, the Yankees that is. The Red Sox look like they are dying a slow death from the wild card race as well.

Mentally, maybe they have taken the division. Technically no. The only team that can beat them are the Sox. I don't see it happening though. They have been on a slide, even gettting swept by the Royals, now that is sad. Every season the Yankees usually take the lead in the division and never look back. This looks like that time.

looking good as of now baby, boston i think is dead at this point, no one is going to knock of the yanks for the division title, i just get nervous with the first round of the playoffs, best of 5 is to short, anything can happen, dont know why it has not been changed to a best of 7, the yanks right now are the best team in all of baseball, no doubt, looks like another world title coming soon, maybe that is why we are getting a new stadium, so there is enough room to put more trophies. i hate boston, and i hate the stinking mets, like they say on the yes network, power, pinstripes, pride, go yanks

Yes. The Red Sox are sunk, their pitching is a joke. The Blue Jays are too far back, and not a strong enough team to make a run at the Yankees. New York is starting to roll, and they're not going to stop, that lineup is just too damn strong. Congrats Steinbrenner, you bought yourself another World Series.

as the great yankee yogi berra once said "it aint over till its over"....but it would take another fluke like the 2004 boston comeback from a 3-0 deficit for the yanks to lose it...for all intents and purposes this seems to be the year that the yanks finally reclaim what they have not had in 6 years

Not mathematically yet, but for all practical purposes, yes.

Anything can happen, but with the way New York is playing and Boston is absolutely tanking it, it looks over for the Red Sux.

Nope.

As Yogi said "It ain't over untill it's over."

Still plenty of season left to play.
