Jews have always lived in what is now Israel. So have Arabs: indeed genetically the local Jews, Christians and Arabs are identical.

Further settlement of Jews happened in the early 20th Century with increased anti-Semitism in Euirope. After the Holocaust, it was the one of the only places they could go.

In those days, there was still colonialism, and people still could settle in places. Indeed, only in the 1960s did the rule come in that "conquest can not give good title to land".

People often want to apply present-day law and rules to old, even ancient, population movements and political control: Northern Ireland, for example. In real life, vested interests and newly-born generations (in the case of Israel, who speak a language spoken nowhere else, and that no other country will take) mean that history cannot be undone.

But, despite their location, Israelis are Europeans. They think like Europeans and want compromise. Arabs do not: they want "justice" without compromise. And their population has grown incredibly. (I happen to have Algerian population figures at hand: from 4.5 million in 1900 they have become over 25 million.)

And every one of those Arabs wants his "rightful inheritance": 100% of what his great grandfather had.

LIfe, unfortunately, is mostly luck and perseverence -- hard work. The Arabs have had neither in recent centuries, except for the oil.
