Are you talking about the lid on a grand or baby grand as opposed to an upright? I'm assuming that's what you mean. The lid controls how much sound comes out and where it goes.

It reflects the sound toward the audience. Without the lid the sound would be directed more upward than outward.

It all has to do with acoustics. If it was closed, then the music would sound muffles and quiet. It was ideally designed to keep dust out but has now become a visual enhancement.
