How can I rent an apartment/room with someone in Amsterdam?

I'm a 20-year-old US citizen and college student considering a long-term stay in Amsterdam after Christmas if I get into this internship for Amsterdam Weekly, so I'm wondering how it's possible to rent an apartment or find a room in Amsterdam or the suburbs?
