"PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS": 45 letters; a lung disease caused by breathing in certain particles. However, there are strong indications that the word was coined by puzzler Everett Smith in 1935 as a hypothetical long word that could result from the protraction of medical terms.

"FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION": 29 letters; the act of estimating as worthless. It was declared by the Guinness Book of Records, in its 1992 and subsequent editions, as the "longest real word" in the English language.

"Pneumonoultramicros copicsilicovolcano coniosis" (ignore the spaces) is the longest word in most English dictionaries. There's some debate over whether it's an actual word though (despite the fact that it's in the dictionary). Wikipedia has a pretty good article about it.

"Antidisestablishmentarianism" is the longest common example of a word formed by agglutinative construction, but it is NOT the longest word in the English language, as some may think.

I do, however, know that "stewardesses" is the longest word you can type using only your left hand.

Actually "antidisestablishmentarianism" which mean people who are against the people who are for establishment. Kind of contradicting. But its the longest word in English with a meaning. There are longer, like the pneumonia something but it actually doesn't have a meaning. It was made to show that it was possible for there to be a word that long. Its not scientific or anything.

The Guinness Book of Records, in its 1992 and subsequent editions, declared the "longest real word" in the English language to be floccinaucinihilipilification at 29 letters. (More recent editions of the book have since acknowledged pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.) Defined as "the act of estimating (something) as worthless", its usage has been recorded as far back as 1741.

Q. What is the longest word in the dictionary?
A. It depends . . .

It might be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (which appears in the Oxford English Dictionary), unless you want to count names of diseases (such as 'pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis', defined by the OED as "a factitious word alleged to mean 'a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust' but occurring chiefly as an instance of a very long word"), places (such as 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch', a village in Wales), chemical compounds (apparently there is one that is 1,913 letters long), and also a few words found only in Joyce's Finnegans Wake.

EDIT: for some reason, Yahoo Answers chopped off the end of the word. You can read the whole word at this link:

That is the longest NON-TECHNICAL word. There are other longer ones, but they are medical and scientific-type terms.

'pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis' it is a lung disease caused from the ashes of a volcanoe. However certain chemical chais can seem to become an indefinate length and a place name.
