This lady from a different department knows when we have potlucks. she always shows up, grabs tons of food and doesn't even say thanks. We told her it was only for people who contribute, and she went away and brought back an opened bottle of flat diet soda. She said that was her contribution and grabbed a bunch of pizza. Nobody even drinks diet soda here. How can I get this woman---politely---to stop mooching off of us?

I agree with another poster. You and your coworkers are experts in playing the Office Politics game, and this is why you haven't stooped to her level and told her off. It will simply make you look ignorant and she the victim (when she's really not). So yes, I agree. You all have a secret meeting where you all make your delicious potluck food and hide it, and leave some nasty crap on the office conf. room table that you all have overseasoned, burnt, and put lots of bizarre food combinations together. Purchase some pot roast, smear it with peanut butter, and serve with lima beans. Get a big box of Ritz crackers and smear mayonnaise between two and serve. Make lemonade with saltwater instead of sugar. I hate moochers. I am so fired up LOL! Now, if this is too bizarre, you or whoever the department head is, has to tell her that she is no longer welcome at your potlucks, and it is for departmental employees only, and she is more than welcome the the Christmas potluck for all employees. If she has a problem with it, inform her that this is your supervisor's policy, and make sure your coworkers are there to back you up and really professionally as possible, "gang up" on her.

alternate the times of your potlucks, like have them at different times then inform everyone that is meant to attend what time, then she won't know when they are or have a big sign on the door saying people from your department only.

Be rude, Some people never will listen or get the hint until you are. Nothing wrong with being rude if you get your point across because she doesnt pay your bills..
