Of course they do. lol

it takes awhile for a WATER Turtle to drown (about an hour or more). But they will, since they have no gills. A land turtle (not tortise... like a box turtle or something) will drown pretty quick, however.

Turtles breathe air. They can hold their breaths for a long time, and some species in some situations can actually absorb a small amount of air through the cloaca- the opening at the base of the tail, but they all need air.

Turtles are often drowned by keepers who do not include some way for the turtle to get out of the water, or who set up tanks that allow the turtles to get trapped underwater, etc.

Yes, turtles are not fish. They do need oxygen at some point. Depending on the species, they are able to stay under water for a considerable amount of time. They can even sleep underwater. But, this is why sometimes you just see little noses in ponds. This is because the turtle needed a quick breath and will dive back down.

Not sure what kind of turtle you are referring to. A red-ear slider, for example, does hang out under water for long periods of time, and many times during the day. You must however provide an area that it can get out of the water and they must get vitamin D from the sun as their shell will get brittle ! If it is small and the water is too deep, they will die of exhaustion trying to climb out.

yes, if you put one in a container that doesn't have a place for it to rest with its head above water it will drown when it gets too tired to swim!

They do breathe air so I guess they can if they were, say, tied to the bottom or something.
