If an actor is good, you never know s/he is acting.

If you can tell they are acting, it means their acting skills are not mastered to their full potential. Gifted actors can easily make you believe they are being themselves. So, the only time you can tell they are acting is when the actor is not in full control of his skill.

However, some excellent actors / actresses are sometimes not at their best performance due to various reasons some of which are fatigue, not convinced with the role or had not assimilated themselves with the character they are resembling, and so on and so forth.

On the other hand, if you are referring to their behavior in real life, not at the stage, it is not difficult to notice when they are not playing themselves because the situations they are put in are not studded before and there should be a weak sign or a slip of a tongue or even an artificial reaction that can easily be noticed.

We are all playing ourselves. You can say something you don't mean, be as fake as you want... you don't have to be an actor for that. Maybe being a fake is who they really are. Also know that who or what roles they play, they are using lessons and what they know from their own personalities to display that persona. Its always them, just different versions.

The same way that you know when non-actors are "acting"...there's a disconnect between their behavior and the person you normally know them to be.

It can be a pretty fine line.

If every part they play in different productions seems very much the same, they play themselves.

it takes me awhile to figure out if some regular people are "fake" or not. so unless i was around them for awhile i couldn't tell if they were acting-especially if they're an "actor"

See? Thats *exactly* why I admire Keanu Reeves so much. He just plays his dopey self in every movie, and still gets roles...

The better they are at a role, the closer it hits home with them.
