First impression he is bad, but guess we look too much on the surface and did not take a greater views on the task that he has on hand.

Middle East has always been in a state of war, where country need to exercise caution on it neighbours and without a strong and ruthless regime it cannot hold and control power for long, least providing stability for it country men.

At least under him everyone is leading a stable and peaceful life's and all major political parties are check and curd within their own sphere of influences.

Though most of the method are very harsh and cruel, and most of the times lead to genocide of villager's and op-poser, if he had lead the people in a more democratic way that would be good for all.

Sometime evil and good happen just between the thin red line, it hard to judge or to avoid. to the people of his native county he a hero, but outside he a devils, why was this so, maybe it due to favouritism to his tribes.

We seen and we hear from the news, yes they deserved to be killed by murdering so many innocents lives, but what happened if he did nothing and let the control embroil in civil war with more deaths as we have today.. That is left to history to judge.

Obviously, he feels he has not been treated fairly, but I think it is difficult for Westerners to sympathize with him in the same way that some people in the Middle East do.
He is neither a victim nor a hero but someone who was willing to attack his neighbors and internal groups when his own agenda called for it.
His own agenda was to keep all the power in a few people's hands; but he often changed his mind about who to trust and once someone fell foul of his temper, there was nothing much they could do to save themselves.
One thing he will be remembered for is his use of 'old-style' secularism to prevent sectarian conflict. It was the first thing that reappeared once he was out of the way, which any schoolboy could have predicted.

I don't know about Europe, but we Americans are generally of the opinion that he should either rot in jail or die. Definitely do no want him running a country again.

In other words, no more or less than any other dictator.
