Here's a few large pieces of property that might be owned by one person (or one family):
La Escalera Ranch covers 300,000 acres (1,200 sq km) in Texas and is owned by the Gerarld Lyda family. It's listed as one of the largest ranches in Texas.
However, the world's largest ranch is in Australia - Anna Creek Station (Station is Australian for ranch). It covered 5.5 million acres (which is more than the country of Belgium, or about half of the size of England). Read about it here:
http://www.williamcreekcampground.com/outback/annacreek/anaacreek.htm
Reading its history, it appears that while it was managed by one person at many times, it was started as a partnership between 3 people, and probably continued to be a partnership - and thus not 'owned' by one person.
I would imagine that the largest single piece of property owned by a private individual might be a ranch or other piece of land that has a rather low economic value (maybe mining or timber land), that has been kept within a family for generations and not divided up. Some governments are monarchies or other types of royal system, where the head of state technically 'owns' all the property in the country, and the people might claim a level of ownership for their land even though it belongs to the king or queen or emir. Or possibly, a land speculator or entrepreneur in Russia has been quietly building up a large holding of property, although probably wants to remain anonymous, to keep from being harassed by the Russian government and the Russian mafia. Nowadays, most individuals who would want to own large pieces of land would probably set up a private corporation to legally own it on paper, because in general, laws are more favorable towards that. So even if the property owner on paper is some company, it might just be one individual owning it.
