I've often wondered this myself. Why not say "leaving a dump"? or "dumping a dump"? It makes no sense to "take a dump".

taking as in to have, taken, but really you're giving, as in giving the toilet a present. Dump, well that's self explanatory.

My family calls it, taking a grumpy. I guess because we feel grumpy until we get to go to the bathroom. Then we feel like a million $$$.
