Sleep training is teaching a baby that the proper way to fall asleep is to cry, yell, and scream until she/he drops of sheer exhaustion. As opposed to parenting a baby to sleep and teaching her/him that the best way to fall asleep is to be relaxed and gently drop off.

Sleep training is trying to force a baby or young child to go to sleep when you want them to all on their own after much screaming, crying and being lonely and upset.
It's about forcing the baby to fit into the parent's lifestyle instead of the parent adapting in order to meet the child's needs for his/her presence and helping them to fall off to sleep in a relaxed, gentle and loving manner.
Parents who sleep train miss out on quiet, night time cuddles with warm and relaxed little children who are drifting off peacefully to sleep, secure in the knowledge that mom or dad will come if they are needed.
