Hmm... I'm a huge Yankees fan, and I love Jeter.. (ANd not just for his looks eitther) I mean he is a great clutch player, and a team leader.. He has also been a part of the team for 11 years.
It's very hard to just choose 20 of all time though... There is quite a competition out there... Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Lou Gerhig, and more modern you got Bernie Williams, Don Mattingly, Paul O'neil, and present day Mariano... And thats just with the Yankees!!!
I guess it depends on who you ask, I mean your going back to almsot 100 years, all positions, both leagues, all the teams, every player to play the game... Its really hard to pick the top 20... I would say he is definitely up there though, but it depends on who you ask... He's got my vote!!!

No. He's certainly among the top 20 shortstops, but I'd be hard-pressed to put him among even the top 50 players.
Baseball Reference measure four different methods for likely Hall of Famers; in only one of those is Jeter among the top 20 among active players, let alone all-time. He's led the league in any major statistical category exactly twice in his career (runs in '98 and hits in '99) and has never finished higher than 3rd in MVP voting. While his numbers are consistent and well above average, particularly for a middle infielder, they do not place him among the elite of the game.
Edit: I notice that every answer that agrees he's a top 20 player got a thumbs-up and every one that didn't got a thumbs down. Are you actually reading the answers to see why they think what they do, or just blindly approving of anyone who agrees with you?

Obviously there are some sore Boston Red Sox fans answering after that big beating they just took. However Derek Jeter is one of the top players of all time and I would rate him top 20. He won't produce to many home runs but, as already stated, he is Mr Clutch and has great all around numbers. You always know that Derek will come through for you, and that is what makes a great player.

I like Derek Jeter..... he's a hell of a player. But top 20 of all-time?
He's not even in the top 50. Maybe not even the top 100. He might not even be in the top 20 Yankees of all-time.
As for the Hall Of Fame..... it'll be close. He'll probably make it - but not on the first ballot.

Alex Rodriquez hits with greater power. Derek Jeter hits for a greater clever time-honored, is a greater clever protecting participant, and a greater clever teammate and clubhouse presence. i might say Derek Jeter is greater clever.

I would have to say yes - he is clutch and he has been for a long time - he has a few rings, he plays great defense, and he's a leader - I think if I was building a team, I'd have to start with Jeter

Hell no. I'll give you top 50, but 20 is pushing it. If he played in Kansas City instead of New York no one would ever ask that question.
