Maybe because we have feelings. It depends to the cause you know..let's put it this way..don't do to others if you don't want others do it to you..if all people are considerate enough to each other maybe noone will get offended, because when we think the words before we speak.. but as i say, we always experience such feelings of being offended because we have emotions and we can no control of the feelingss of others too. but if we know how to accept our faults then maybe it is no longer a problem.

You might be talking about German people. They're very sensitive about the war and particularly the SS, who were the real bad boys of Nazism. Asking them about the SS may not seem like much to you, but it touches a real sore spot with them. Live and learn.

Low self esteem.
They hear something and if they can see anything negative in it they apply it to themselves and get angry.
Me, I hear something that might be a slur, and think of a dog barking. Would I get angry at the dog? No, it can't help itself. Since people aren't that different, why not give them the same benefit of the doubt?
So bark! ;-)

Because they feel insecure. Too bad isn't it, that people feel so badly about themselves that they go looking to be insulted. It's very sad.
