Definitely the tutor. I'd fall asleep trying to study chess alone. It is very dry to me. I played as a young woman but didn't get hooked.

I'd get a tutor. People tend to learn better watching what's going on and you can have your questions answered right away.

I started by getting taght by my dad (Equal to computer champ) at the young and tender age of 4,then I started learning textbooks and then I joined the school team and became the 21st best player in my city.!

I'd get a tutor but I don't think I could ever be botehred learning how to play. That kinda stuff bores me silly!

The book--provided it is annotated--then try it out in actual games. Theory then practice is the way it goes for me.
