Antiphons Method represents one of the earliest attempts to menurate (measure) the area of a circle in terms of a limit of increasing numbers of smaller and smaller polygons. It wsa also refered to as the 'method of exhaustion' in very old works on geometry.

It gets credited to Eudoxus by Archimedes, but reference is made to it and Antiphon by Socrates in the middle of the 5'th century BC, about a hundred years before Archimedes.

It's importance is that it seems to be the very first attempt to use an infinite sequence, or infinite series, to solve a problem and, as such, is the very first step along the road to Calculus.
