I am a huge drifting fan and have tried to spread the word about it amongst anyone who I think might be interested but have actually NEVER heard anyone disrespect it once they understand what it is, either on tv, in print media or in person. I think it is far more exciting than roundy-round racing and has much more to offer the general public than nascar or probably any other form of racing. Mainly because it is all action all the time while in all other racing there is tons of time of seemingly "driving in circles at high speed."
Also, on most parking lot drift courses you can see all the action up close from one place while any road course racing (ie, Champ Car, F1 etc) you will get a great view of one area of the track.
Right now drifting just needs to get more exposure through word of mouth, tv and maybe at other racing events. So keep spreading the word.
Also, the other posts about "racing" are partially wrong. The overall speed of the lead car during a tandem drift is part of the judges scoring as well as the ability of the car behind to keep up. If the trailing car ever happened to fall way behind the lead car then the trailing car would probably received no points.
So, if I tried to race a 120hp ford ranger against a 240sx I may be able to hang it out farther but I could never keep with the guy in front.

Others don't get it, In part cause it's subjective. Judges give points based on their perception of a competitors drift. There's no checkerd flag, or times to determine who wins. Don't get me wrong, it does take skill to do what competitors do, but from a fan standpoint, unless a driver passes another, who's to say who wins.
It is a serious motor sport, in part due to factories taking notice and sponsoring cars. It really doesn't have the TV support to be considered a major motorsport. It's still in it's infancy here in the US, but you can see it growing amonst the import crowd (try to find an AE86 for cheap).

Well I hope it gets respect as a motor sport because that's the best way to keep it off the street. I used to live in Japan and I've seen Darwin in action on the roads there. I guess maybe it doesn't get respect because it seems like deliberate abuse of a perfectly good car and tires. Only time will tell if it's just a passing fad or not.

I think drifting is fun, bot for me it is not a true motorsport due to the fact that the drifting competition is not based on time, but on a point scoring system. My favorite sport is rally and the most fun part about rally is drifting, but drifting just with the purpose of drifting seems more like fun that racing to me.

You aren't racing. All you are doing is hoping to get the most points by going around a bend right. Sorry can't think of the best way to describe it. It isn't a sport though. Even if you call it a sport it isn't a MOTOR sport. The sport is more a secondary thing to what is being done. Maybe not even as high as secondary.

Drifting is fun but it is not the quickest way around a corner and nearly all motorsport is based on that. Also if you have to have points for "style" then it gets like ice skating with accusations of favoritism, etc.

It's a sport maybe, definitely a skill, but it isn't racing. If you like it, that's cool too. Check out youtube.com, all those Arabs in Kuwait drifting leftover cars all over the place and into the crowds. Crazy.

Honestly, the people that disrespect any sort of racing need to be beaten or something. I love to watch all different kinds of racing and I think I can kind of answer your question. Alot of really stupid people... get into NASCAR. Not saying theres anything bad because im a huge fan, but its one of those things that get more coverage than anything else. And some people aren't very open minded when it comes to racing. But kudos to you for loving drifting. I've watched it on t.v. and I was going to go see it one time but something came up. I would love to see it get more popular and generate a larger fan base. :)

It took Nascar over 40 years to become popular,,,,give it time,,,if the sport doesn't just fade away and people continue to show an interest,,,,the public will catch on and it will continue to work its way up the ladder in popularity
