Yahoo! Answers is a poor venue for questions on the law. The replies tend not only to be wrong, but perverse. Furthermore, word of mouth from non-lawyers is not a good source for recommendations regarding competence.

I would start the research for a lawyer to protect the interests of the survivors and the estate of the deceased with the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Assocation:

And wouldn't you know, there is a seminar going on this week in Nashville, sponsored by them, on automobile torts.

Until you have a lawyer, do not talk to the insurance company of any other party, nor the lawyer for anyone else. You must (and probably already have) talk honestly to your own insurer, and to their lawyers.

You may well be contacted directly or indirectly by lawyers seeking your business. That, too, is a poor way to hire a lawyer. If s/he needs to hustle for your business s/he is probably not the best. A lawyer who is afraid to go to trial and overly eager to settle is putting his or her interests above yours.

Most tort claims, in fact, do settle -- but on the eve of trial, on the courthouse steps. That is good strategy and normal game theory.

Good luck.

Why do you want to talk to lawyer? Nothing you can do especially if you dont have standing to sue.

Are you related to the victim? Thats the only way I could see you having standing...

You need to talk to your insurance company. They will be paying for the whole situation so let their lawyers handle it and only talk to them! This is my neighbor the attorney's advice when we were in an accident that we "caused." It proved true.
