heat causes clothes to shrink.
that's why if it says wash or dry in cold water or on low cycle, you do that.

BIG difference. Any delicate fabrics like wool, silk and sometimes even cotton will shrink in warm water. Either do what the clothes label tells you, or wash everything in cold water.

Use cold water and dry on a gentle cycle. If buying cotton, go up one size and wash before you wear. They will only shrink so much. You may be drying them on too hot of a cycle.

hot water is usually the culprit.
some fabrics will shrink in cold water too though.
the dryer is also a reason clothes shrink
