mirena. that's what I have. It also has a better possibility to stop your menstrual altogether for good, unlike the copper one.

I have a copper IUD. I can't take hormonal birth control becuase of another medicine I'm currently taking that would reduce the effectiveness of it, so this was my only option. It's good though...I've been on the pill before, and it was horrible. The Mirena IUD is hormonal, I believe.

The nice thing about the ParaGard is that it won't mess with your body/hormones. Women are SUPPOSED to have a period every month, and are supposed to ovulate every month. It just seems wrong to take a medicine that prevents them from happening.

I've had mine about a year now, and I love it. Slightly heavier/longer periods than normal for the first few cycles, but things went back to normal. Other than that, no complaints. It's over 99% effective, and is good for 10 years. The truly nice thing about it is that if you decide you want to have a baby eventually, your ob/gyn removes it and you're fertile as soon as you ovulate again. With hormonal birth control, in most cases it takes your body an 'adjustment period' to get back to normal before you can conceive.

I like the ones with copper that dont have the medicine too. The ones with the copper release some of the metal in you which changes the linining of your uterus so they dont hatch. The ones with the medicines release drugs into you like birth control pills. They can cause you to become nauseated just like the pill. Talk to your doctor about brand names. They only will give you about 3 different brands. If its a county hospital you probablly only have two to choose from. If you go with the ones that release the hormones then try a "ring" first. Its a round ring that you stick into your vagina. You keep it in there until your third week. Then you have your period. You get a new ring each month. Its about the same cost as the pills and it releases the same hormones. Guys cant feel the ring and neither can you. If you can handle these hormones you might be able to handle the one in the IUD. The copper was used by farmers. they put copper pennies into camels to prevent pregnancy, and in christ times they put copper pieces into their camels.

I have a paraguard and LOVE it. I didn't want one with drugs...if I wanted those side effects I would take the pill. Mine is a copper one. I got it at my 6 week followup after having my second child. The insertion wasn't bad at all (it's inserted through a straw type thing) since my cervix wasn't back to normal yet. I spotted for a couple of days and had some mild cramping (like a period) that motrin took care of.

I do have heavier periods now (especially for about a year following) but my baby is now six and there hasn't been a third child so I call it a success!

I totally recommend it!
