You can get in pretty decent shape in a month. If you can join the cross-country team right now, you will be in excellent shape for track in the spring. If you can't fit cross-country into your school schedule, sign up for a 5k race that is 3 or 4 weeks from now and start training for it now. Start with a mile or two even if you have to walk part of. Run 3 or 4 days a week and then add a day for next week. In two weeks, try to get some 3 mile runs in. You can find specific training plans at www.runnersworld.com.
Good luck with your training and I hope you have a great track season next semester!

It will take a while, but you won't notice.

After a couple weeks of training, you will be be able to run a fair distance without feeling too uncomfortable.

I would recommend start training now. The longer you can train before track starts in the spring, the more comfortable you will be running with the team. Talk to the coach, try to figure out what type of runner you will be (sprinter, distance, maybe even a jumper), then you can do some specific training to "catch up" in experiance.
