A survey crew does lots of different things. For example, they perform boundary surveys, which determines property lines and rights-of way (i.e. City-owned roads). A crew could also conduct a topographical survey, which includes locating all the features (utilities, trees, pavement, buildings, etc.) and the topography (contour) of a site.
A crew uses different types equipment to perform the work, varying from a plain old, yet effective, measuring tape and level/rod to a "total station", which records the position of object and records them in an electronic form.
Surveyors are site investigators. They research property at courthouses, develop complete 3-D models, and provide drawings to their clients for use in design.
