I don't know enough about the main characters to be helpful, but as for the modern day significance, in the second half of the poem those from the southern end of the river Rhine merge with those in the west. You could try looking in to how cultures have blended with others in recent times and how they adopt the ways of others.
I could be way off the mark, but it's an idea.
PS in Nordic myth the Nibelungs were 'elves of light' who hoarded light in the form of gold in their underground kingdom.

Interesting question. Howver, please be aware that I just asked my 12 year old daughter and she was able to produce an extremely clear and well thought out response with almost no effort.
