One of the basic themes in Literature is the attaintment of self-knowledge: a character's recognintion of his strenghts and weaknesses, hopes and fears, beliefs and superstitions. Often this self-knowledge occurs after the character has undergone a socking experience that makes himsee his world in a new light. Show how Hemingway deals with this theme in A Farewell to Arms. Refer to events, Setting, or symbols onlybas they relate to this theme. Show that you know what self-knowledge is.-

Hi Franky - you really have to read it to grasp the symbolism. I respectfully suggest you use spellcheck as you're typing up the paper on the pc (so it's not a socking/shocking experience to your teacher/professor). If you want some assistance writing an essay, here you go:

AFTER you've read it, check out the following links, each of which has a good write-up on A Farewell to Arms:

To give you a sample of what you'll be seeing, I'll leave you with this brief excerpt from the write-up given by www.gradesaver.com:

"Hemingway repeatedly emphasizes the horrific devastation war has wrought on everyone involved. From the opening account of cholera that kills "only" 7,000 men to the graphic description of the artillery bombardment to the corrupt violence during the Italian retreat, A Farewell to Arms is among the most frank anti-war novels.

But Hemingway does not merely condemn war. Rather, he indicts the world at large for its atmosphere of destruction. Henry frequently reflects upon the world's insistence on breaking and killing everyone; it is as if the world cannot bear to let anyone remain happy and safe."

Get to work, and good luck!
