It is simple. I majored in Biology and History.
Our standards for education are based on the conservative European model. America used the German model for Kindergarten through High School (originally High School's were college prep with an entrance exam).
Our Universities were bases on the English Model.
So what does this mean? Well, it was believed that it was important for everyone to have a broad understanding of all fields. This was to make them better citizens and thinkers.
This has been debated before.
Since you are a Nurse, you should know that today Nursing Students go to school for shorter amount of time than previously.
I will had some interesting links for you.
One is a Movie from archive.org.
The other is a paper I did years ago as a undergraduate. It is poorly written, but the context is good.

Interesting.
Is said nurse deceased? if so then nothing, as the dead have little to hardley any needs.
But if she or he is alive and well then it only makes them smarter,
educated and a better civil participant.
sounds boring or whatever? sure, may seem that way until someone is taking away your pension, or cuting preschool, or sending your kid off to college,
or there is no union to protect you, or even just getting sued.
knowlege is power.
Knowing the Constitiution should be a duty.....because if you trust other people to think for you, then we're in trouble, and by we're i mean you.
Political science opens your world into diffrent ways in which you are a political actor, how your actions affect every thing else on earth, from voting to looking at how information is presented how to read stitistics..to case studies.......and bla bla bla..
if it still sounds boring or pointless, then good luck with that.

Its extremely important. A nurse can also be a lawyer, a lobbyist or a board member on the state board of nurse examiners. People on the state board actually write laws and they go to their state legislative body to get them approved. A nurse can work for the local county hospital or public health department and lobby their county commisioners to get more money. If you are a nursing student you can become a "governmental affairs chairwoman" on the state level or national level of your student nursing association. The constitution is important no matter who you are, a teacher, plumber or fast food worker.

Besides legalities of being a nurse, learning about the documents and political traditions of our country will make you a better citizen.

The idea is that because you are a part of this culture you need to know about it. You need to know in general terms how your government works, and you need to know the Constitution, at least a little about it, because it specifies what your rights are. That is a good thing to know. A lot of people spent a lot of suffering and blood establishing this country and protecting it for you, its kind of a matter of respect for their sacrifice to know what they died for.

Everyone should be aware of how their government works. Especially a nurse, because you will be dealing with people, and people know what their rights are.
