I would recommend that you try to find a job prior to comming here. It is hard to get into any type of apartment without a job or previous rental in Las Vegas (very transient town and lot of landlords are gun shy of renting to newcommers). It will also give you a ball park figure of where you can afford to live the cost of living the past few years has sky rocketed. Utilities are very high here power bills as much as $400 for a 2000 sq ft home and then you have the other utilities as well.

A lot of people move here thinging they can get a good paying job right away - but most jobs that are easy to obtain do not pay well. Also employers are also gun shy about hiring people that have not been here for at least 6 months.

Stay away from the central part of the city. DO NOT move to North Las Vegas or anywhere up near Nellis AFB. I would recommend Henderson or the very west side of town over near Red Rock Canyon. Everything in these parts of town is very new and clean. You won't have trouble finding places to shop or eat. I'd recommend Food 4 Less for your groceries. Cost of living has gone up since I lived there last year. Since you live in Chicago it might even be less than your cost of living now.

If you like small towns you may want to consider Boulder City. Established in the early 1930's for workers constructing Boulder Dam, it is a very cute town with lots of personality. You'll be close to Lake Mead if you like water recreation. Boulder City is about 20 miles Southeast of Las Vegas.
