Have you been reading Catcher in the Rye? Yes, the majority of people present themselves as being pretty unapproachable, extremely busy and unconcerned about anything that doesn't explicitly have something to do with them... but that's a pretty simplistic viewpoint. A lot of people just aren't very good socially, and they come off as being worse than they really are...
