u will lose alot of weight with it, but u'll most likely gain it all back after. it isnt exactly the healthiest diet eather because ur body still needs carbs which the Atkins makes you avoid

I think that the Atkins diet could be a temporary solution to removing a large amount of weight. However, I don't think that it's a great idea for someone to use as a long term weight maintenance plan. A balanced diet is still the recommended way to go. Humans are omnivores who are meant to eat some of everything. You are not supposed to eliminate an entire food group (breads&cereals)

If you do Atkins the correct way, you can lose the weight you want and keep it off in a healthy way.
People who criticize this diet don't know the whole story. You do not eliminate all carbs forever. And you don't just eat mayonnaise.
In the beginning, you eliminate carbs to get your body in a state of Ketosis - which means you're burning your body fat for fuel. Slowly, you can add carbs.

Here's a simple fact: Each of us needs a certain amount of carbs to use for energy. However, Most of us take in too many. The carbs that are not used are stored by the body as fat.
By reducing the carb intake under the minimum level, the body calls upon these fat reserves and burns them for energy.

Marathon runners restrict their intake of carbs until the night before a race. Then they "carb load" by eating lots of pasta which gives a carb deprived body kind of a supercharge - at least for a while.

I did the Atkins diet... it was tough! But I did lose.
My understanding is that it only works once ... so if you gain the weight back ..you won;t be able to do Atkins to take it off again.
I think that this diet is hard to "maintain" once you have reached your desired weight. Look for a more sensible approach... less fat, less carbs, more veggies... something healthier....good luck...oh ya...nothing works without exercise

I lost 18 pounds by sticking to it very firm for 1 month.
I gained 11 of it back 6 months later, but I love beer.

Its hard on your body, but it does work. Healthy weight loss is about changing your lifestyle. I do recommend people try atkins though, because you will see just how much junk you really do eat! Try it for 2 weeks, you might be amazed how much you start craving junk.

Too much protein & fat intake (as recommended in the Atkins Diet) can increase the risks of gout, kidney disease & heart problems.
Eating less of everything & exercising more regularly is the solution to weight loss.

Personally, it worked really well for me... since I am significantly over-weight and was diagnosed as having insulin resistance. If you stay on the Induction phase of the diet, you can lose at least one pound per day. My doctor recommended only using the diet for 3 months at a time as it can be rather hard on your kidneys.

This is a diet where even the slightest cheating is a huge mistake.

My typical daily menu was as follows:

Breakfast:
Water
2 fried or scrambled eggs
2 sausages

Lunch:
Water
Salad with ham or turkey
NO CARROTS! They have lots of carbs
1/2 sliced cucumber or 1/2 avocado
2 tablespoons Italian dressing

Dinner:
Meat (chicken, beef, pork, fish.. its up to you) without any breading.
1/2 - 1 whole cucumber sliced and drizzled with Italian dressing.
Water

Do not consume ANY caffeine while on the diet as caffeine has a very strong effect on blood sugar levels.

I totally recommend http://www.atkins.com for support and recipe ideas... and its free!

I think its like all diets: Crap, organized diets are just glorified ways to make over weight and unhealthy people lie to themselves and feel they are doing something about themselves. Ultimately its all down to smart eating and regular exercise topped off with unyielding determination. Its like buying those machines advertised on TV (work your abs, butt or whatever) - You would get more out of just running/cycling/swimming regularly.

But I guess diets are also there to help people who have no idea where to start with a diet and need to be 'told' what to eat.

The Zone is a better option. It combines protein, carbs, and fat in one meal to balance your sugar levels (insulin). Once in balance your body has the ability to use the stored fat in your body. This way of eating should leave you feeling less tired and hungry. Food is measured in blocks. Example:

3 oz chicken (3 protien blocks) = 21 grams protein
1/2 cup of chick peas (2 carb blocks) & 2 tomatoes (1 carb block); = 30 grams of carbs; Lettuce is so low it really takes a lot to make up 1 block.
1 Tsp olive oil (3 Fat blocks) w/ 2 tsp vinegar for dressing = 9 grams fat.

The book gives you the measurements of a block in the back of the book to make a meal and/or snack.

It'll work if your dedicated. I'm on it and It's working for me.
