Well, basically research the topic, and outline. Make sure the contents of the outline are going to defend the thesis statement.
Then as to the writing.. . .
1) Introductory Paragraph. Thesis statement comes at the end.
2) Body paragraphs. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that defends the thesis and have example(s) arguing your point.
3) Conclusion paragraph.
Basically do what the China Doll says, and remember the thesis is the most important part. Without a understandable thesis, (that your audience wouldn't have to read a few times to figure out what you mean) your paper won't make any sense.
Of course, if you are writing a narrative essay, then it has a few differences. Notably it wouldn't have a thesis and would briefly reflect on the importance of the event at the end.

procrastinate as much as possible, do not steal from books, web or other literature references cause the grader will know, read and re read what you've written out loud, it helps, Ask people for help, dont be afraid to rhyme, these are the basics. that i use...
