I made sure to delete the songs I had previously had on my itunes so it wouldn't do something crazy.

You can't transfer directly from iPod to computer using iTunes. It is made to work the other way, iTunes to iPod. You have to use your iPod as a data device instead and copy the files to your computer like you would copy from a thumb drive or disk. Before you do though, make sure your iTunes isn't set up to automatically update your iPod.

You've probably lost all of your songs. You'll have to re-download them.

well there's your problem...because you deleted all the songs on your library you no longer have any songs on your ipod...it looks to me that you may have your itunes set to automatically update your ipod whenever you plug it in...this happened to me once...the only thing i could do was download all those songs all over again...that may not be the only thing you can do but that's what i did

unless you have all those songs backed up on your computers hard drive ( which is highly recommended) you cant get them back. you will have to re- import them all.
