I bet their service would be the sh|t!! Can you imagine how crisp and clear the reception would be? They'd put everyone else out of service. I just thought of this because now Disney is in on providing cell phone service. Plus NASA could make a killing off of it. They could use the money to fund a mission to Mars, and then some. Imagine their cell phones too! They'd be so high tech. You think NASA will ever do it?

NASA could place a "special satellite" into orbit. We all know government funded things are better quality than what you'd find at your local store.

It's not part of NASA'a charter to go into the telecommunications business. There are already several satellite telephone services available. It turns out this is an expensive way to provide telephone service. Iridium phones cost over $1000 new, are large compared to your typical cellphone, and cost 99 cents per minute and up. And this was after the current operator was able to buy the satellite system for pennies on the dollar from the bankrupt original company.

Better phone service is certainly available, but at a price. For the most part, people are more interested in free minutes, cool ringtones, and free phones that take pictures, than they are in transmission quality.

Uhhh, considering that cells are usually every 5 or 10 miles between towers to cover the power in the cell, what do you think NASA could do. Put a satellite at 10 miles high (50,000 feet) which is not terrible much higher than a commercial flight. At that height, it would have little ground coverage and the atmospheric drag would bring it down in minutes.

At 50 miles high, not much coverage except for the space shuttle...and NASA would end up paying their cell phone bills.

NExt idea please.

Unfortunately, the way things are going, if you ordered NASA phone service, you would get it ten years later and $200M over budget.

Of course then congress would decide that it should be an international venture (to spread the cost around) and it would end up costing even more and not actually performing the service for which it was designed.
