It's not the discovery of three new planets. They just renamed three satellites as planets. They already new about the satellites, they just redefined the criteria of what a planet was, so these three fit the criteria. Funny thing is though, Pluto does not, so they actually contemplated pulling the Planet ranking away from Pluto but decided not to. Anyways, there is an article attached that you can check out.

This is not a discovery... Before now, the definition of a planet" was just a wondering star in the sky that turned out to be objects orbiting our sun. As it turned out, there are several objects orbiting the sun and science had advanced a lot since then... So what is happeneing is a nailing down of what a planet is. So with that, they are considering naming 3 more objects in the solar system "planets."

It does have meaning because a whole new region of space has opened up to us.

The Kuiper Belt of which these objects belong, has only recently been theorized. The speculation is that there are millions of objects in it, so get ready for a whole swag of planets to come on board.

The Kuiper belt probably extends from beyond Saturn to way out beyond Pluto. It may also explains why Saturn has more satellites than Jupiter, even though Jupiter is much bigger and should capture more objects. Saturn has captured wayward Kuiper objects, and one or more has come too close and disintegrated to form Saturn's ring system.

All through the ages, the more we've learned, the bigger space has turned out to be. Now we know the Solar System is much bigger than we thought.

What do you mean special meaning..?

Did the other discoveries have a special meaning? Did the discovery of Pluto have a special meaning? Was the landing on the moon meaningful?

If you are talking about the vague definition of planets for our own solar system....no.

So which number will we teach our children? 8 planets (Pluto is still in debate) or 24 planets (if Pluto is a planet then the total is approx 24 in our solarsystem)?

Maybe...It seems like it.Anyway what are the new planets names and how do they look?Smaller than Pluto?Actually i doubt theres a BIGGER planet behind Pluto cause i dont know what is keeping Pluto in a weird orbit.

No, those planets are just part of the asteroid belt by Pluto, which by the way Pluto might be a part of, so it means nothing. They just started to go around.....wow!!!!!!!!!

Historically, yes. I do think it's a milestone in some ways. We have new neighbors. I'll have to drop by and give them a 'welcome basket' filled with goodies.
