I grew up in a small town where sexist doctrine was almost an institution - You know old men born in the 30's rasied in the depresion and all that good stuff. I moved to the city and almost forgot about it because it wasn't in my face and it isn't talked about or joked about the way it was when I left 6 yrs ago.

But I started talking to a women at work about wages and quite to my surprise she is making minimum wage
So I started doing my own little survey..... they are all making minimum wage $7.75 hr. A lot of them have been there for more than a few years .
I started a little survy amongst the guys who all started at 10 and have been getting raises here and there.

Now I don't have all the details (and never will) but it seems very suspicious to me that women 7.75 and no rasies and men 10 with raises based on performance and senoirity etc.

I have never talked about wages before and I think I might be one of the first to do so - it just isn't very polite.

I suspect but I do not know and I do not know to what extent if it isn't an isolated incidence

I believe women's work is very underpaid. Office jobs are still paying $12/hr in many places - some even $10/hr. With the cost of living, that's really sad. There are so many in the workforce they can do that. Some jobs 100 to 250 people have applied and it's also a function of supply & demand.

My husband is in sales and says it's difficult to motivate the highly-paid sales staff. They happen to all be men and I think they get in a comfort zone - whereas he's found the companies that employ female sales people - their women are consistant achievers.

I think there is also religious bias out there, where bosses assume the woman has a man to take care of them - or secretly feel women shouldn't be successful.

Of course drawing these conclusions could be considered sexist. There are exceptions to every "rule." :)
