Any university can be the best university in the US according to how you spend your time there. You get out of your education what you put into it. If you don't want to learn something at Princeton or Brown or Harvard, you're not going to learn it. If you're head over heels in love with a topic at the University of South Bumpkinsville, you can become a world leader at it. I think all the college ratings can get really elitist and silly, and are largely based on the snob factor.

I'm kind of partial to Michigan and Northwestern, myself. But those Ivy League schools are pretty good, too. Besides, we not only have great academics, but we also enjoy athletics, well-rounded weather, better food, and lower tuition. That really should count more heavily in the rankings :-)

Depends on what your are studying. Also, journalists tend to make the selections based on their own narrow view of the world. According to the journalists at US News and World Reviews

1. Princeton
2. Harvard
3. Yale
4. Stanford

I would tend to disagree - I would put MIT and Stanford above Princeton and Yale, especially for engineering degrees. Again, it depends on what you plan to study.
