In Virtual Villagers how are you getting so many tech points?

I see lots of hints about having the second and third levels of technology completed, but my points are going really slowly. I have bought the 2nd level of building and farming but the third levels seem to be very far off from my reach. Thanks!

A lot of people are just plain cheating :(

Researchers make the most tech points. Farmers do not have to take care of crops for them to grow. I just changed them all to researchers while the crops were growing
