I have a device that has an output port for a computer and I want to hook it up to my PC. It is the same I/O that my internet connection would use. If I plug this in, how do I figure out if the information is coming in. I am guessing that just plugging it in I will not see anything, so I want to know if there are things I can check (I am sure there are, the cable internet guy checks all sorts of things) to see what info and what type of info is coming into my PC.
Thanks.

It is a rowing machine at fitness store I saw. It cost around 3000 bucks, but its gym quality. The sales guys didn't really know about the port, but I told them I would come back with my laptop to see how it works. I just want to make sure I am prepared to know how to access the info if its not obvious.
