Traditionally, cosplay characters are characters seen in manga and anime.

As far as American comics though, there are some American comic characters than have been made into manga, such is the case with the Marvel Mangaverse with the X-men, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four to name a few groups.

I would then say, as long as you use a character and costume scheme that is in one of the manga books, I'd say it's fair play at an anime con.

Sure you can! But most offical anime conventions will only allow Japanese characters into the cosplay contests. So, as long as you don't plan on entering a contest, have fun being whatever you want.

Depends on the type of con you are going to. If you are going to an anime con and cosplay an american comic book character, you will get your *** kicked. If you go to an american comic book con, you will be fine.

Sure, comic book conventions will generally have a costume contest. I've seen guys as Spider man, Nightcrawler, Dr. Doom, Captain America. Have fun!

nope i dont think so...
Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), a contraction (or portmanteau) of the English words "costume" and "play", is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands.
so i guess if you dress up as an american comic book character... your just wearing a costume...
