- 10 + k - k + 12 = 2

They're probably just trying to get you to expand and simplify, or something similar.

-(10-k)-(k-12)
=-10+k-k+12
=2

Its algebra. Do you know what k is equal to? If so, substitute in the value for "k" and solve it.
