Shipping and handling is the biggest money making scam on ebay these days. The one thing I always look at is how much the seller is charging for shipping and then look at the other sellers to see what they are charging for the same item. Granted, some services are more expensive or further away from my home but some sellers are out of control with their prices. Many sellers do not have to drive to the post office, they call the po and get their packages picked up at their home, so the gas excuse is bogus. Material from the US post office are free, so the material charge is bogus also. If it costs $5.00 to send me a package and the seller charges $6.50, I can deal with that charge but not an additional $5.00.

Sometimes it is...you can report it for excessive shipping. However, you do have to take into account for supplies....boxes, envelopes, tape, packing material, gas to get to the post office, etc. $9.00 to ship a DVD does sound a little excessive, though. It also depends on shipping methods, though. Priority starts at like $4.05 now and goes up from there according to weight. Excessive shipping is also called "fee avoidance." Sellers are charged a final value fee based on what the item sells for not including the shipping...so a lot of sellers sell their stuff cheap and charge a lot for shipping to make their money. That's really unfortunate, but that, too can be reported to Ebay.

Yeah, it is pretty crappy. They start the bid low so it looks like you're getting a deal (and to pay lower ebay fees), and make up for it in the s/h.
Ebay sent out an email a few weeks ago stating that they were addressing this issue. Soon, they say, they're going to check auctions for overpriced shipping. They can charge the actual cost of shipping the item plus a very small handling fee. So maybe something will be done about it soon.
Have a good night =)

Yes, I found this all too often too! Many of the sellers try to get attention to the cost of the cheap opening bids, and ALOT of people do not notice the huge cost of the shipping charges. This is where they are trying to make their money.
It's sad really. I think that Ebay should definately do something about this. It has gone out of control!

Sellers are able to add a handling charge to the shipping without the buyers knowing.. for instance, if UPS charges 5.00, there's an option for them to add an additonal handling charge without the buyer knowing that they added it themselves...
Sometimes the seller can fool you by giving you a cheaper price, and then adding it to the shipping and handling...

Yes, the shipping prices are outrageous. I think that's where most of the sellers make their money.

Wow. How hard is it to hit the "back" button? You shouldn't generalize. Many people on Ebay charge what is fair, just some bad apples in the basket.
