Just say you need personal time off aka vacation time. No need to spill everything to your employer, specifics are none of his/her business anyway.

Death in the family - however this one can be tricky to pull off. If an employer is suspicious then it is pretty easy to check up on the deaths notices.
Need some time off to go see a very sick family member is easier - they can then have a miracle recovery a week later when he asks about them.

one co-worker called to say that her ex-husband had kidnapped her. That was unique. She was later fired because she was spotted at the bar near the office when the boss was on lunch. If you have personal time coming, why not ask for a personal day? If its personal, you need not explain or lie.
