BTW THIS IS A AUTO.I have a 97 dodge neon, the timing belt broke(long story.)Every thing is fixed now but the shifting into 3rd and the belt is rubbing the timing cover.I was told if the timing belt is on right it should NOT be rubbing anything.I have ran into transmission problems, but after my husband change the filter and fluid. It went from not shifting into reverse(he put trans slip fluid in it and it fixed the problem)to not shifting into second, now it shifts into 3rd randomly.I am thinking it could be that the timing is off. What are the odds?

Before all of these (timing belt issuises)my mom had a guy "fix" the oil leak. When we got the car back,i took it for a drive.15 min down the road the car would not get past 45MPH then drop until 0MPH or i made and complete stop and so forth (until i got it home)thats how we got the tranny problems. They guy didnt even fix the oil leak all he is was replace the head gasket. When my husband fixed the bent valves we had to replace the cam/oil seals,it fixed the "oil" leak!I wouldnt think a transmission would act this way without showing any signs of falure before failing?I cleaned the tranny pan myself,it had one small metal scrap/piece?Its also smoking from the catalicic? convertor?I read somewhere it means the top of the engine is bad.I know for a fact it is not,i sat and watch my husband do all the valve work step by step from the manual. We do need to change the oil. Thanks for everones input!all those answers give me a few things to look at.

Timing off would cause misfires in the engine. You'd hear clicking sounds. Timing belt absolutely shouldn't be rubbing ANYTHING. Have the timing belt tensioner adjusted correctly. I'm thinking when he changed the tranny fluid, he introduced some air bubbles with the fluid or overfilled.

If you actually broke the timing belt then you should do a compression check on each cylinder to make sure you didn't bend any valves. The timing belt should not rub on the cover under any circumstances. Either you got a timing belt for the wrong motor and it is too long, or the cover was put on incorrectly and needs to be taken off and reinstalled properly. Your transmission problems are either because a shift solenoid in the transmission has failed, or the transmission has been under filled. Your transmission will not shift properly if there isn't enough fluid in it. It will jump between gears if it is low. Make sure the engine is running and everything warmed to operating temperature when you check the fluid level.

In short, NO !! The transmission in your Neon is not controlled/shifted by computer, therefore it can't be a shift solenoid. You have a 3 speed automatic. !! The timing belt does not affect the transmission shift patterns !!! What you need to check first is the detent cable that goes from the throttle body to the transmission. Neon's in particular have a problem with the rod (at the end of the cable at trans) at the transmission getting corroded and getting hung up inside the selector rod. When this happend it can cause the transmission to shift erratic and/or late.

Your timing does not affect shift points. The belt rubbing is a problem because it will cause the belt to wear prematurely. That problem needs to be remedied as soon as possible. ( It may just be the alignment of the cover...........not hard to fix.) If it is runnning the belt is on right but the cover may not be. Your trans problem is not in any way related to the timing belt. You may have a deeper problem w/ the trans. Slip fluid only prolongs the inevitable. Somehting is wrong w/ the trans and must be fixed before it (transmission) needs to be replaced. I would take it to a service center and have them do a trans flush. Ask arround, I should be about $100.

With cars, anything is possible. ertainly the timing belt should not be rubbing and it should be fixed before it too breaks. It may be possible, but I wouldn{t bet that this is the cause. There can be something going on in the transmission. (Read: get an estimate BEFORE those rascals have at your car! Find out what they warranty. A national chain left me with a bigger bill than I had in mind and the warranty wasn{t worth the paper it was written on because of so many !"%/U))=) loopholes.

if you have good insurance (and the people who hit you do as well) you can possibly get another car) That could be a good thing. Did you get checked out at the hospital? Even if you feel fine you should go get checked out while its still covered by insurance. Good luck to you, hope you arent in that much pain. I get into my first pretty bad wreck about a year ago and totaled that car.... I now have another one, kinda miss my other. I was in a LOT of pain..... cant really think of a good thing that came out of it.... I guess I like the car I got now, but other than that I dont know what good came out of it, other than the fact that my daughter and I lived. :)

if the timing is off it will not make it not shift gears,,you still have a transmission problem somewhere,,,i own a repair shop,,and we deal with this sort of thing all the time, your right about the belt hitting the cover,,it,s not on right,,as for the transmission,,there is still a problem with it,,you may have to take it ,,and have it checked out,,to find out the cause of it,,timing will not make it shift,,or not shift,,also have the belt checked again,,it may come back off,,and if it does it,s going to cause a new batch of problems for you,, i hope this helps.

This has nothing to do with the timing belt which is only to do with the engine, there is something serious going on with the transmission.
Looks like you have 2 things going on here, but unrelated.
Sounds expensive

not the timing. The trans has a pump in it and it could be failing, torque converter not full of fluid causing eratic shift behavior, did u get the correct fluid, is filter on properly, are all the electrical lines connected to the tranny, could be a computer problem, are the cooling lines connected pinched or damaged these hoses can fail from the inside without any sign of problems on the outside.
