I think perhaps leaving programs open. I have that problem sometimes when i leave my Paint Shop Pro Program on while i leave my puter unattended. And there are many behind the scenes programs running too that conflict and the computer just gets tired. boo hoo.

You should not be leaving a running computer. Every computer in my narrow experience goes into standby if you don't move the mouse or press a key for a few minutes. Windows XP Home makes me re-enter my password before it reopens, so you are the lucky one

Check if you have a timeout set up for inactivity. In XP, You hit Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes Tab

Check if the computer goes (or tries to go) into suspend or standby when inactive, turn that off(select never). That may be it.
