G'day,

Unfortunately you did not specify how old it is.

If you don't want to open your computer case, and find the model number printed on your motherboard, then the best way is to check it from the BIOS number. BIOS number is a string of codes displayed on the bottom of your screen when you boot your computer (just when it counts the memory and checking for your hard drive). Hit the 'Pause' button on your keyboard to temporarily stop whatever it is doing (eg. memory count) and right everything down.
Go to the link mentioned below, and clik on 'BIOS numbers'. It may have the information you want, even sometimes the model of the motherboard and it's manufacturer.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Is it a Dell/Gateway/Emachine/etc?
or is it a custom built machine not using those company's low end boards?

Umm... ya, no one in the world can tell you that from the unrelated info you gave us. Tell us the manu, and model number, and we can tell you, you can even email me that info and I will try to tell you.
