The best option is to get eitheir a Yamaha Pacifica or Yamaha EG112. These guitars are quite under priced. When compared to a Squier Strat if find the yamahas to be superior. They are cheaper too and come with a reasonably good amp.

It depends on what kind of music you want to play, and how big of a hand you have, and how heavy of a guitar you think you can handle. I find that as far as Fenders go, the strats tend to be lighter, and the telecasters are heavyer. Gibson solid bodies I found were also on the heavier side, and any guitar with a hollow body was much lighter.
However, seeing as you are already looking at an electric strat, and you are a beginner, try looking for a "Squire Strat". For one thing, they are often times cheaper and you get the same sound as a real stratocaster, it is the guitar I learned to play on (and I've been playing for a good while), and I still use it quite often. Plus here's the special thing about the squires:
If you look hard enough over the internet, at Guitar Center, or catalogue or any place where you would find it likely to find a guitar, you can buy something called a "Beginners Package"
What that means is that for about the same price as the strat like instrument you are looking at it comes the guitar, an small amp (even though they are small they have an excellent sound and sometimes come with basic built in distortion knobs, meaning make it sound more like it does in most rock bands, and trust me when you buy an amp separate from a guitar, it starts to add up financially...), plus a few guitar picks, an electric tuner (because trust me tuning the guitar by ear is really really really hard), a guitar strap, and a new set of strings (in case you break a string along the way, and trust me, it will happen to you because I've seen guitarists break strings at concerts), and if you're into teaching yourself to play it, the package also comes with a basic how-to-play-for-beginers book.

that's a good choise...get fender strat...or squire strat which is lot more cheaper. If you take a good care of your guitar...it will last forever. Learn how to maintain it from an experience musician/ guitarist.
