Loved that movie.
It is not really artsy so much as it is philosophy.
The movie is clearly a direct argument/debate about existentialism. You know, Frederich Nietzsche and Soren Kierkegaard and alike.
The two groups, the french lady and the old couple actually represent the two fighting styles of existential philosophy; id est Nietzsche's and the later works of Nicolis and Kierkegaard.
Do some reading on existential philosophy or take a class if you want to learn more.

Just get out an encyclopedia or a philosophy book and look up e'xistentialism.' That movie is one big joke on it (i think they told you several times as well) For instance, in the beginning he's trying to catch up with himself - or when he says he,s having an 'existential crisis' and they ask, 'when did it begin?" a lot of the scenes were philosophical examples/ hypotheticals. Take a philosophy course. Think of the movie "The Matrix' which was like one big dumbed down basic philosophy sparknotes. The difference is Huckabees makes you laugh if you are familiar with it - it's clever, whereas the Matrix was only interesting if you've never read a book in your life.

The movie is about existentialism, but quite a few people have already said that. It's certainly not the kind of film that you want to walk in half way through, because it will totally make you crazy. It wasn't my favorite, but I did like it. They play it a lot on Premium. People that didn't like it, also didn't get it - just like being john malkovich.

I think it's been explained above quite well. I loved it and bought it, but not because I understand the philosophy but because I don't. laughed several body parts off. may call the existential detectives to help find them but don't want them spying on me at work or in the bath/bed room.

I was like you and disappointed in the movie. Was it about family? and the ties to one another - it has been awhile since I say it - either way won't be seeing it again to figure it out!
