230 - 95 + 120 = 255 m below the surface

or you could look at it like a vertical number line:

surface of the ocean = 0 m

it descends 230 m (subtract 230): 0 - 230

it ascends 95 m (add 95): 0 - 230 + 95

then dives 120 m (subtract 120): 0 - 230 + 95 - 120

0 -230 + 95 - 120 = -255

since our answer (-255) is a negative number, that means that the submarine is 255 m below 0. In other words, it ends at 255 m below the surface.

Think of going down 230m as -230. Going up 95m means +95, then dive back down 120, is -120. Then what you have is

-230 + 95 - 120 = -255

the answer is negative because we are talking about measurements BELOW the water surface. So the answer is 255 meters below water surface.

lets not panic here, we are not underwater, just the submarine

this is pretty simple if you just go through each movement and watch your signs

so, we start out 230 meters below the surface, the easiest way to keep track is to call that negative 230 (-230)

then it ascendad (went up) 95 meters, that is plus 95 (it went up)

then it dove 120 m (down, so that is negative again, -120)

altogether that is:
-230+95-120=-255

minus 255 means 255 m below sea level

notice how going up 95 m and then back down 120 m is the same as just going down 25 m

230 m down, go down 25 m more, your at 255 m down, just like the arithmetic came out

The sub started from 0 to -230m. Then it gained 95m. and then dove again - 120

New depth = -230 + 95 - 120 = -255m

i'm too lazy to figure it out but the problem translates to: 230 - 95 + 120 = ?. the answer is how many feet below the sea the sub is.

230 -93 = 135
135 + 120 = 255

255 m

you go up 95, so subtract becasue depth decrease, it go down add because depth increase.

If it sescended 230m below you - that from the 95 o.k then you add the 120m and you should get 255m
