Over irrigation and poor drainage is usually associated with mushroom or fairy rings. Breaking up the soil within the area is usually all that is required. A pitchfork pushed into the ground in several plaves within the circle will allow the grass, if not dead, to reestablish itself as water penetration is improved by breaking up the dense fungal mat of mycelia(root mat) of the mushroom, or remove cores of soil that are at least 1/4 to 1 inch in diameter and slightly deeper than the fungal mat.

dish soap and water will get rid of the mushrooms everytime, and cause no other damage to the surrounding lawn and in effect will help with other problems such as slugs etc.
